A Guided Tour Into a Black Hole
On Tuesday, 24 March, Center of Gravity (CoG) members Ariadna Ribes Metidieri, Leart Sabani, and Lucía Vélez Tartajo took part in the first outreach event organized by the Center of Gravity: a public talk at the Tycho Brahe Planetarium in Copenhagen.
The two-hour event, attended by roughly 200 people, took the audience on a journey through the cosmos to explore the physics of black holes. Lucía Vélez Tartajo opened the evening from the Planetarium itself, guiding the audience through the life cycle of stars and explaining how black holes can form from the collapse of the most massive stars. Ariadna Ribes Metidieri followed with an introduction to the theoretical foundations of black holes, outlining key ideas from general relativity and describing what one might experience when falling into one. Leart Sabani concluded by explaining how physicists observe black holes in practice, through their effects on surrounding matter and through gravitational waves, and by presenting the research carried out at CoG.
The event ended with a lively Q&A session, during which the audience posed a wide range of questions, from “How black is a black hole?” to “How long does a merger take?”. The discussion reflected the curiosity and enthusiasm sparked by the event, showing that black holes continue to fascinate scientists and the public alike.
