DESCRIPTION:Light travelling through the Universe is deflected by the inte
 rvening gravitational fields\, a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing
 . This effect was an early prediction of General Relativity (GR) and it ha
 s become an essential tool in astronomy.The existence of gravitational wav
 es was another prediction of GR\, but in this case we had to wait until 20
 15 for the first detection. Since then\, hundreds of events have been dete
 cted in LVK\, a number that will increase significantly in the next observ
 ing run and with future detectors like LISA and the Einstein Telescope.\n
 \nThis large number of detections guarantees the eventual observation of l
 ensed gravitational waves. Similarly to light\, gravitational waves are af
 fected by intervening matter\, but with some important differences\, e.g. 
 they can experience diffraction. In this talk I will discuss the phenomen
 ology of gravitational wave lensing\, highlighting some key differences wi
 th light and focusing in the wave-optics regime. Finally\, I will cover th
 e exciting implications of the recently announced event GW231123\, which c
 an beconsidered to be the first serious candidate for a lensed GW.

 r potentialAbstract: Many features of the ringdown have remained obscure u
 ntil today: is there a well-defined and unique way to define the starting 
 time of the ringdown? How do quasi-normal mode amplitudes grow before reac
 hing a constant value? What other kinds of signals are present in the wave
 form right after the merger? Knowing the Green function of a black hole wo
 uld allow us to solve all of these questions in a precise way. Since the s
 eminal paper of Leaver\, little work has been done to compute the full tim
 e-domain Green function of black holes. I will show that it is possible to
  exactly solve the Green function of a toy-model approximating the Regge-W
 heeler-Zerilli equations\, namely the Poschl-Teller potential. Several sur
 prises come out of the computation: the existence of exponentially growing
  modes right before the ringdown starting time\, and the presence of addit
 ional redshift modes (distinct from QNM) during the ringdown.* * *Speaker:

DESCRIPTION:Gravitational waves are inevitably lensed as they propagate th
 rough the universe\, leading to deflection\, magnification\, and novel int
 eractions between GW polarizations\, which can produce distinctive signatu
 res of modified gravity theories. In particular\, scalar-tensor models wit
 h screening mechanisms\, such as symmetron gravity\, introduce effective m
 ass terms for GWs and result in lens-induced dispersion\, a frequency-depe
 ndent phase shift of the waveform. This dispersive effect can be significa
 ntly enhanced in screened environments and may\, in extreme cases\, inhibi
 t GW propagation through certain astrophysical bodies\, effectively turnin
 g them into reflectors. I will present a formalism that extends beyond the
  geometric optics approximation\, enabling precise characterization of the
 se phenomena and opening up novel avenues to use gravitational wave lensin
 g as a testing ground for theories of dynamical dark energy.

 ergy astrophysical phenomena and continue to inspire several aspects of mo
 dern theoretical physics and astrophysics. Powering some of the most lumi
 nous transients in the universe across the electromagnetic band and the gr
 avitational wave spectrum\, merging compact binaries are prime targets for
  current and future multi-messenger astronomy. Leveraging advances in mode
 rn computational relativistic astrophysics and numerical relativity enable
 s us to uncover novel insights into this extreme side of the relativistic 
 universe. In this talk\, I will show some of the most recent developments 
 in this field\, including how merging neutron stars can power the stronges

DESCRIPTION:Black holes provide an abiding source for puzzles that highlig
 ht tensions between quantum effects and gravity. In this context the infor
 mation paradox is arguable the most notorious puzzle. Studying and resolvi
 ng tensions that arise in such puzzles teaches us about quantum gravity\, 
 which is an outstanding problem. Meanwhile\, our expanding universe is wel
 l approximated by de Sitter space\, for which notions of quantum gravity r
 emain elusive. In this talk I will carefully review and adopt lessons from
  studying black holes and use those to learn about de Sitter space. I will
  especially explore thermodynamics and complexity in de Sitter space in th
 e context of recent discussions advocating an explicit inclusion of an obs
 erver.

DESCRIPTION:Accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been prop
 osed as efficient formation channels for massive binary black holes (BBHs)
 . These environments are unique astrophysical laboratories in which dynami
 cal interactions and gas-assisted migration can efficiently gather and mer
 ge BBHs. In particular\, these BBHs are expected to merge in the vicinity 
 of the central supermassive black hole (SMBH)\, which can act as a gravita
 tional lens for the gravitational waves (GWs) they emit. Such a lensing co
 nfiguration\, with the source and lens at close separation\, is unique bec
 ause it produces a large opening angle between the images. This leads to 
 distinctive signatures in the observed signals that encode both lensing an
 d environmental information. This feature leads to unique observational si
 gnatures that can be exploited for detection. I will first discuss the pro
 spects for detecting such lensed GW signals with current and future observ
 atories. I will then describe the characteristic phenomenologies of these 
 systems\, with particular emphasis on the effects of the large opening ang
 le. Finally\, I will conclude by highlighting the potential astrophysical

DESCRIPTION:Gravitational Wave Astronomy has already demonstrated its pote
 ntial to explore the Universe\, but we are still at the beginning of this 
 journey. While we regularly observe gravitational waves from compact binar
 ies\, we do not know what we may discover next. In the first part of my ta
 lk\, I will discuss the role of model-independent searches (also known as 
 gravitational-wave burst searches) in this exploration. I will focus on th
 e coherent WaveBurst\, the types of searches\, the latest developments\, a
 nd future prospects. As it uses minimal assumptions about the signal model
 s\, it can detect compact binaries with special properties. It can also de
 tect sources where exact signal models are not available\, such as core-co
 llapse supernovae\, which will be the focus of the second part of my prese
 ntation. The next nearby event will be one of the most exciting astronomic
 al events of the century. I will discuss the current search status and fut
 ure prospects. Finally\, I will summarize the first International Gravitat
 ional-Wave Network SN2025gw Symposium on gravitational waves from core-col
 lapse supernovae (Warsaw\, 21-25 July 2025).

 Professor of Physics.Abstract: The Mielke--Baekler spacetimes are three-di
 mensional reductive homogeneous spaces together with a choice of invariant
  connection which is compatible with a lorentzian metric. The spacetimes g
 eneralise Minkowski and (anti)de~Sitter spacetimes in that the invariant m
 etric connection can have torsion\, a peculiarity of three dimensions. Usi
 ng the techniques of nonlinear realisations\, we construct worldline actio
 ns for massive spinning particles moving in these spacetimes. We pay parti
 cular attention to the so-called teleparallel branch\, in which the curvat
 ure vanishes. We show in this case that the spinning particle trajectories
  are geodesic relative to a Weitzenböck connection or\, equivalently\, as
  a Papapetrou-type equation with a spin-curvature force in the Levi-Civita
  description. We also present the canonical action and discuss the resulti
 ng physical degrees of freedom.  We then take the carrollian limit of the
 se geometries and introduce the carrollian analogues of the Mielke--Baekle
 r spacetimes and repeat the analysis in that case.

 gle high-energy limit of tree-level string amplitudes from various perspec
 tives. I will show that the resulting 1/α′ expansion is governed by Ber
 noulli-number data rather than the multiple zeta values familiar from the 
 low-energy expansion around α′=0\, and illustrate how resurgence promot
 es these divergent series to transseries with nontrivial Stokes phenomena 
 at four points. I will also comment on extensions to higher multiplicity t
 hrough difference equations\, evidence a framework unifying low- and high-
 energy features\, and discuss the connection between Stokes phenomena\, in
 tersection numbers and the double-copy. This is based on work in collabora

  discuss black holes in Einstein gravity described dually by a quantum mec
 hanics — the BFSS matrix model — in the ’t Hooft limit. If the black
  hole is static\, the dual description is an ensemble of states in strongl
 y coupled quantum mechanics. The thermal physics of such a black hole is w
 ell understood on both sides of the duality. However\, much less is known 
 if the black hole is rotating. I will show that beyond a critical rotation
 \, the black hole is unstable towards perturbations that break the isometr
 y along the rotation angle. I will argue that this is signal for a new fam
 ily of black holes — rotating black bars — branching off from this ins
 tability. This would be interpreted as a symmetry-breaking phase transitio
 n in a spinning ensemble of BFSS. I will also discuss related observations
  in the weakly coupled limit of the matrix theory.

DESCRIPTION:Interference is one of the most universal phenomena in nature\
 , as exemplified by the real-time Feynman path integral. Despite the ubiqu
 ity of interference patterns\, their evaluation has often proven challengi
 ng. This is especially apparent when considering lensing in astrophysics i
 n the wave optics regime and when studying quantum cosmology using the pat
 h integral for gravity. The oscillatory integrals involved are frequently 
 conditionally convergent\, converge slowly\, and artefacts such as depende
 nce on unphysical cut-offs can be difficult to avoid. Traditionally\, thes
 e oscillatory integrals are approximated with saddle point methods. Howeve
 r\, determining which saddle points to include can be a tricky exercise.Us
 ing Picard-Lefschetz theory — a general\, exact method for handling mult
 idimensional oscillatory integrals — I will present an unambiguous defin
 ition of the real-time path integral and an efficient numerical method for
  its evaluation. I will show that we can unambiguously identify the releva
 nt instantons using resurgence theory. By going beyond the WKB approximati
 on\, we obtain asymptotic series whose interrelations enable us to detect 
 which instantons contribute to the path integral. The resulting propagator
  consists of an interference pattern governed by the caustics of the under
 lying classical system. These methods pave the way to the study of real-ti
 me dynamical systems in our quantum Universe.

 uto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. Abstract: Future space-based gravitationa
 l-wave observatories like LISA will open a unique avenue to study the envi
 ronments surrounding black holes. Intermediate and extreme mass-ratio insp
 irals will spend thousands to millions of cycles in the sensitivity range 
 of \\these detectors\, allowing subtle environmental effects to accumulate
  in the gravitational waveform. In this seminar I will discuss the dynamic
 s and gravitational-wave signatures of EMRIs evolving in scalar cloud envi
 ronments — bosonic condensates that can grow around spinning black holes
  through superradiance\, and which also serve as a useful proxy for modell
 ing more complex environments. I will give an overview of recent efforts t
 o model these systems through fully relativistic perturbative calculations
 \, including ongoing work to incorporate eccentric and inclined orbits. I 
 will then highlight some of the interesting phenomena that have emerged fr
 om these studies\, such as delayed inspirals\, resonant excitations of the
  cloud's modes in the strong-field regime\, and evidence for non-integrabl
 e geodesic motion once the cloud's self-gravity is taken into account.

 The history of gravitational physics contains many remarkable characters\,
  but few pairings are as unexpectedly fruitful as Karl Schwarzschild and K
 arl Heun. Schwarzschild's exact solutions of Einstein's equations describe
  some of the most important compact objects in general relativity\, while 
 Heun's equations appear throughout mathematical physics as one of the most
  general classes of exactly solvable differential equations. In recent wor
 k\, these two Karls have repeatedly found themselves sharing the same stag
 e.\n    \nIn this talk\, I will present two examples in which scalar-field
  dynamics in strong gravitational fields reveal hidden analytic structure.
  The first concerns the massive\, non-minimally coupled Klein–Gordon equ
 ation in the interior Schwarzschild solution describing a constant-density
  relativistic star. By uncovering an underlying Fuchsian structure\, the r
 adial equation can be solved exactly in terms of Heun functions\, leading 
 to analytic solutions throughout the stellar interior and novel behavior n
 ear the Buchdahl compactness limit.\n    \nThe second example involves mas
 sive charged scalar fields around Kerr–Newman black holes. Here\, exact 
 analytic methods can be used to characterize quasibound states and superra
 diant instabilities\, yielding closed-form instability regions and scalar-
 mass thresholds without relying on traditional approximations.

 The Galactic Center (GC) is the closest laboratory for studying the enviro
 nment around a supermassive black hole (SMBH). Besides giving us valuable 
 insight into what such environments may look like in other galaxies\, it i
 s the cleanest laboratory for testing our understanding of gravity near su
 permassive compact objects.In this talk I will take you on a journey to th
 e GC\, give an overview of the GC science case\, and highlight how current
  observations with the GRAVITY instrument at the Very Large Telescope are 
 pushing our understanding of gravity and of the central parts of our galax
 y to unprecedented precision. In particular\, I will present the first sel
 f-consistent test of the Parametrized Post-Newtonian parameters near a SMB
 H\; the discovery of a star sensitive to the spin of Sgr A*\; and the dete
 ction of orbital motion near the innermost stable circular orbit. I will c
 onclude by discussing how these results are just the first few steps on th
 e road to an experimental test of the no-hair theorem.

 lapses to form a black hole\, quantum field theory predicts the emission o
 f an energy outflux to future null infinity\, which later relaxes to Hawki
 ng radiation. Within the semiclassical framework\, we derive a simple\, cl
 osed form\, analytical expression for the energy outflux emitted from a sp
 herical thin null shell collapsing to form a black hole. In particular\, t
 his energy outflux vanishes (quadratically in r-2M) as the shell approache
 s the horizon. This result refutes claims that the Hawking energy outflux 
 originates from the collapsing body\, showing instead that it develops in 
 a broad strong-field region. Additionally\, this vanishing implies that se
 miclassical backreaction cannot prevent or significantly affect the classi
 cal process of gravitational collapse and horizon formation (as sometimes 
 claimed). This talk is based on the joint work arXiv:2503.00622 with Amos 
 Ori.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Black hole perturbations\, nonlinearities\, and new phy
 sicsAbstract: Understanding and quantifying beyond leading order effects e
 nables more accurate tests of General Relativity and of physics beyond the
  Standard Model. Here I discuss vacuum gravitational perturbations as well
  as superradiant scalar\, vector\, and tensor boson perturbations. First\,
  I explore the nonlinear behavior of gravitational perturbations on a Kerr
  black hole. The ringdown gravitational wave signal\, during the final sta
 ge of binary black hole mergers\, contains important information about the
  properties of the remnant black hole\, and can be used to perform clean t
 ests of general relativity. However\, interpreting the loudest portion of 
 the ringdown signal requires understanding the role of nonlinearities and 
 their potential impact on modeling this phase using linearised theory. Nex
 t\, I discuss nonlinear effects in beyond the standard model particle dyna
 mics around black holes. Oscillating clouds of ultralight bosons can grow 
 around spinning black holes through superradiance. This makes black hole o
 bservations powerful probes of ultralight bosonic fields. Understanding an
 d modelling nonlinear effects is important in accurately testing the exist
 ence of these fields.

DESCRIPTION:Pedro G. Ferreira is the Head of Astrophysics at the Universit
 y of Oxford and the Director of the Beecroft Institute of Particle Physics
  and Cosmology. He studied and worked at Imperial College in London\, at t
 he University of California at Berkeley and at CERN in Geneva. He won the 
 Gerald Whitrow Prize 2022 and the Eddington Medal 2024 of the Royal Astron
 omical Society. Professor Ferreira’s area of expertise is cosmology wher
 e he has studied the relic radiation left over from the Big Bang\, the nat
 ure of dark matter and dark energy\, and has led the way in studying alter
 natives to Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. His book\, “The Pe
 rfect Theory: A Century of Geniuses and the Battle over General Relativity
 ” was shortlisted for the 2014 Royal Society Winton Science Book Prize.
